The linocut work started from a literature reference to Sylvia Plath’s semi-autobiographical novel „The bell jar” from 1963. A famous metaphor in the book is the fig tree. The main character imagines herself in front of a large fig tree and each fig symbolizes a path in life she may take, one for example getting married and having a family, one pursuing a career, becoming a famous writer or one following the path of having affairs instead of settling down etc. Being a woman in the 1950`s, her choices were more limiting, meaning that if she could pick only one `fig`. So, because the choice was so hard to make, she watched all the figs get spoiled and fall at her feet. On a more general basis, this relates to the frustration of having to commit to a direction on your life path, knowing that sacrifices must be made along the way.
